A neighborhood can be defined by its residents, I assert. The residents of the City of Newark are diverse ethnically as well as they are socio-economically, making Newark City a diverse and dynamic community. Select this link for Newark’s Census data: Census Data
Newark City is the largest city in Essex county. It is also the largest city in the State of NJ. The highest concentration of youth in poverty can be found in the West, Central and South Wards. The map at the bottom of this post shows this clearly, with dark blue representing youth in poverty in Newark City.
The social characteristics that are found in Newark City, New Jersey, are as follows (according to American Fact Finder).
- The City’s total population is 266,736, and the African American population is 143,791.
- The percentage of African Americans out of the total population is 53.9%.
- 19.6% of families are below the poverty line, in comparison to 11.1% in the County of Essex, in which Newark is located, and to the national average of 9.8%.
- The MEDIAN household income in Newark is $34, 520 compared to $51,879 in Essex County, and $48, 451in the country.
- Out of Newark’s 107,151 housing units, 22,713 (or 24.6%) are owner occupied, as compared to 69,557 (75.4%) renter occupied.
